Fly Fishing
Fishing is a popular sport;
At one with nature is the report;
Most beautiful, in my eyes;
The form which casts dry flies;
Casting the fly is truly an art;
For the fly weighs much less than a dart;
Ten o'clock-one o'clock, power, power;
Over extend and it all goes sour;
Truly finesse, rhythm and grace;
Greenhorns, wear a hat to protect your face;
Pick-ups and presentations no longer part the brook;
It's time to try the hook;
The experts all agree;
You're only fishing when the fly floats drag free;
Backcast, forecast, fly on the water;
What's the matter, it's swimming like an otter;
Oh I know, it's the wrong leader;
Much better now, just hooked a large Cedar;
Match the hatch, fish the clock, strike with might;
Oh god, my first bite;
Truly this is the Holy Water;
Darkness falls, the hatch is on, fish rising;
That I catch one is not surprising;
What a moment pure and clear;
How I've waited for many a year;
With years of practice my skill grows;
As I watch others in the early throes;
Novices, I've been watching you;
Though usually silent, here's a tip true;
Fish the hole before wading through;
Roll pick-ups, horizontal casts low in the sky;
Overheard, Butch to Sundance, "Who is that guy ?";
Those days all but gone;
Tendinitis has left me wan;
I remember a father, son and old rented boat;
Trolling flies on lines that did not float;
I'm not sure what Lefty, Gary, or Rusty would say;
But we caught several nice Rainbows that day.

stars,
imprison
them for a
thousand years,
lock them in cells
of the whitest white,
not black, not black,
for stars enjoy the black
of night, when chill winds
blow and clear the sky,
O, hide the hateful
meteors! bring
back the clouds,
forgive the
rain, let it fall, let it
fall, let it wash the glint of the
star-clad hook from my mother's eye.

Cool flowing waters
cater me with plenty of…
Aquatic playmates.
Smallmouth and largemouth –
Either kind acceptable,
if they are landed.
Get them in the boat!
Fishing stories without proof
are plain-faced lies.
Imitating bugs?
Fishing is an art form of…
Posing as insects.
The splashing fishes
are vying for attention
during school’s recess.

Out Fishing
The muscular tide,
Gleaming with phosphorescence.
Each oar a varnished shin-bone.
Surgical steel
Questions the gut of the night.
The wet flap of fins;
The slime of an eel
Hauled up to gape at torchlight.
My hand
Fumbles with bait and fish scales.
A numb wind
Blows through the chasm beneath the stars.
Up anchor:
Link upon link, the chain
Folds on the floor,
Shattering the stars in the bilge water.
My father rows,
The granite moon
Rumbles from thunder clouds,
And the electric light
Beads on the aluminium.

Out Fishing
A feller isn’t thinking mean
Out Fishing
His thoughts are mostly good and clean,
Out Fishing,
He doesn’t mock his fellow men,
Or harbor any grudges then,
A feller’s at his finest when,
Out Fishing,
The rich are comrades to the poor,
Out Fishing,
All are brothers of a common lure,
Out Fishing,
The urchin with his pin and string,
Can chum with millionaire or king,
Vain pride is a forgotten thing,
Out Fishing,
A feller gets a chance to dream,
Out Fishing,
He learns the beauties of the stream,
Out Fishing,
And he can wash his soul in air,
That isn’t foul with selfish care,
And relish plain and simple fare,
Out Fishing,
A feller has no time to hate,
Out Fishing,
He isn’t eager to be great,
Out Fishing,
He isn’t thinking thoughts of self,
Or goods stacked high upon the shelf,
But he’s always just himself,
Out Fishing,
A feller’s glad to be a friend,
Out Fishing,
A helping hand he’ll always lend,
Out Fishing,
The brotherhood of rod and line
An’ sky and stream is always fine,
Men come real close to God’s design,
Out Fishing,
A feller ought to see the light,
Out Fishing,
There is no room to start a fight,
Out Fishing,
This silent world has truths to tell,
There are no rainbow trout in hell,
So treat your fellow anglers well,
Out Fishing.
