Fishery Biologists can tell a lot about a body of water and its fishery
management potential from habitat and fish population surveys. But the
bottom line for any fishery is how well it produces to the rod and reel.
Each fishing season biologists interview anglers to obtain information on
fishing success and to examine fish that are caught. However, the number of
waters biologists can survey in a season is very limited, especially
compared with the total number of waters in each Fishery Management Region.
Because sound management begins with good information, we can use your help
collecting information from many more waters all around the state. Information
on where and when you fish; the species you seek; and the number and sizes
of the fish you catch provides the basis for evaluating the status of
fisheries and how they produce over time. Decisions on stocking and
regulations often depend on this information.
Providing records of your fishing is the most important contribution you
can make to the Fishery Division!
In addition to the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to
fishery management while you enjoy Maine's fishery resources, volunteers
who keep records are periodically awarded special fish and wildlife prints
as a token of the Department's appreciation for your help. If you wish to
volunteer to keep a Personal Fishing Record, please contact one of the
Regional Headquarters (listed below).
